How can I remove my lash extensions at home!?

Another insanely popular topic. While I’m all about teaching clients the skills they need to care for their beauty procedures between appointments, removing your lashes at home is something I'd strongly advise against. There is no reason to risk the health and safety of your eyes.

What are some reasons to get your lashes removed?

Maybe you got your lashes done for a special occasion and now that you've got as much wear out them as possible, you have a few stragglers left that need to go. In this instance, we recommend just letting them shed naturally. We know there might be a strong urge to just pluck those last few lashes out, but this may also pull the natural lash out at the root and this is exaclty what can cause damage to the hair follicle.

Sometimes you get your lashes done and you absolutely hate them... In this instance if you are only a few days out from having gotten your full set, we definitely suggest going in for a full removal. If you are trying a new salon, some of them will offer a free removal if you plan to get a new set.

Another common reason to get your lashes removed is an allergic reaction.

Let’s start with a little bit of Lash Extension Adhesive Chemistry 101. The adhesives used for lash extensions are medical grade and formulated to be long-lasting.

Adhesive does not dry, it actually cures into a similar substance as acrylic. In order to be removed, you need a very strong solvent that breaks down the adheisve. At home solutions like coconut, olive or baby oil do not break down adhesive.

Because the adhesive is so strong, improper application can unfortuantely cause an allergic reaction to lash extensions due to adhesive coming into contact with the skin. If this occurs, it is highly recommended that you do not remove your lashes with a solvent to avoid worsening the reaction.

The reaction should typically subside within 48-hours, and your doctor may be able to perscribe a treatment to help reduce symptoms. If the lashes really need to come off, a mechanical removal manual removal where the adhesive is physically broken to release the extension from the natural lash.
