Can you do a brow lamination at home?

Updated: 5 days ago

So, you’re thinking about doing a brow lamination at home. I totally get it. This is a service that I have seen become a very popular go-to when it comes to at-home beauty services. Even one of our favorite companies, brow code, sells a kit for at-home use. Maybe the process seems simple enough, or maybe you’re trying to cut back on some of the beauty expenses. Is an at-home brow lammy right for you? Let's explore some of the pros and cons before you opt for performing a service like this in your bathroom mirror as opposed to seeing a pro.

Before we dive in, we’ll quickly explore the brow lamination process itself. Growing quickly in popularity for its dramatic effect of creating a thick, fluffy brow, the service involves a two-step chemical process that permanently alters the structure of the hair. The first is the lift solution to break the hairs down, giving them their flexibility, followed by a neutralizing solution, or setting lotion to lock the hairs into place. This is how you get that long lasting brushed up effect on the brows lasting you 4 to 6 weeks.

Services like the brow lamination are seemingly pretty straightforward, right? It’s a simple two-step process, three steps if you want to tint your brows as well.

What is missing from doing a brow lamination at home?

While the brow lamination process seems pretty straightforward because of its simple two-step system, some common issues that I see occur when done at home are things like over processing the brow hairs, unevenly shaped brows, and trouble with color-matching.

If you’re going to do an at home kit, I would personally opt for a formula with a longer processing time. If you have thicker brows, you have a lot of room to play with things like processing times with a lower risk of over-processing and thus damaging the hairs. However, there is still a risk with any at-home chemical process when you are not well-versed on the chemistry side of not just these products, but the biology of the skin and hair as well. This knowledge and experience  plays a huge role in the outcome of your service.

Something else to consider with the brow lamination is that it can really manipulate the appearance and shape of the brows; the lamination will make your brows look a lot fuller than they actually are. So when you’re doing a brow lamination at home without a lot of experience in shaping your brows, it's easy to over tweeze these new thick brows you now possess. And as you all know, over tweezing can cause permanent damage to the follicle.

When seeing a professional, we rely on training, and a lot of experience to create a perfectly tailored service for your specific features and needs. Maintaining the fullness of the natural brow, and the integrity of the hair, as well as the surrounding skin are all prioritized when performing this service on our clients. We create a shape that can be worn not just while you have your brow lamination, but also once it starts to cycle out, replaced by new, natural hairs. Tints are perfectly color matched and precisely selected product-wise for safe processing. We typically wrap up your service with a conditioning treatment, and optimal after-care instructions.  All of these factors leave your brows in the best condition possible.

So, now that you have a basic understanding of the process of the brow lamination, you can make a more educated decision when it comes to opting for performing this service at home over seeing a professional.
